a surrogate mother in the US gave birth to quintuplets, that is 5 babies, after having being implanted with 5 embrios to ensure a greater chance of one taking hold and leading to a successful pregnancy. the couple she was a surrogate for had hoped for just one baby, now they're going to have 5... god help them.

in this country they only put back three embrios because of the risk of multiple pregnancy. if there is a multiple pregnancy then the risk of premature birth and subsequent disability is that much greater. I watched a programme once about couples who were desparate to have a baby, and who went through fertility treatments to try to conceive. this one couple conceived quintuplets, and they were born at 28 weeks gestation, and therefore were severely underweight etc. and they basically watched them die one by one over the course of about a month. one would have to ask whether the need to have a child would be worth having to go through that.

Wow! Never rains but it pours, and other cliches. I hope they cope OK.

apparently the woman who acted as the surrogate waived her fee (approx $15000) because of the costs involved in bringing up 5 babies.
